The places worth building a weekend around
A considered guide to Stanthorpe and the Granite Belt.

Stanthorpe works best as a base, not a checklist. The town gives you dinner, coffee and a warm bed; the region unfolds in loops — south to the vineyards and Girraween's granite, north to the orchards and producers, and up Mount Marlay whenever you need to see the whole thing at once.
The southern loop
Girraween National Park anchors the south. In spring the wildflowers carry the show; in winter the granite does. The Pyramid scramble earns its reputation, but the creek circuits give you the park's character in an easy hour if the day is short. Cellar doors line the road back through Ballandean.
The northern run
North of town the Granite Belt turns to orchards. Sutton's presses its apples into juice and pies at Applethorpe, Stanthorpe Cheese matures its rounds at The Summit, and the drive between them smells faintly of both. Donnelly's Castle adds a bushranger detour if the weather is dry.
How the weekend fits
- Two nights works; three feels unhurried.
- Winter: fires, red wine, granite mist. Spring: wildflowers and new releases.
- Everything in this guide is 25 minutes or less from town.
