About

The Castle Rock walking track climbs to one of Girraween National Park's signature granite domes, a distinctive tor that rises dramatically above the surrounding bushland. This steep 5-kilometre return trail ascends steadily through balancing boulders and weathered granite outcrops, characteristics of the Granite Belt's ancient geology. The final section requires a scramble over smooth rock faces to reach the summit, where the effort is rewarded with sweeping 360-degree views across the park's boulder-strewn landscape and neighbouring peaks.

The track winds through open eucalypt forest and patches of wildflowers in season, particularly impressive during spring when native blooms carpet the understory. Walkers navigate naturally formed rock staircases and past balanced boulders that seem to defy gravity, testament to millions of years of weathering. The exposed granite summit dome itself becomes the highlight—a massive, rounded rock platform that catches the light spectacularly at sunrise and sunset.

Visitors often describe the final scramble as challenging but manageable for reasonably fit walkers, and the panoramic summit views as genuinely breathtaking. Regulars recommend tackling the climb in cooler morning hours, bringing plenty of water, and wearing sturdy shoes with good grip for the granite surfaces.
